For over 50 years, Comprehensive Mental Health Services, Inc. has been serving the mental health needs of eastern Jackson County communities. Beginning in 1969, as the Independence Area Mental Health Center, and then as Northeastern Jackson County Mental Health. The name Comprehensive Mental Health Services was adopted in 1981. Administration and outpatient services, including medication clinic, Genoa pharmacy, Swope Health outpatient therapy services, new client intake and healthcare home are housed in the William H. Kyles Building.
Located directly in front of the William H. Kyles building, the Vaughan Building is the location for all of the Adult Community Support Services. The supported employment services provided at this location include adult community support, psycho-social rehabilitation, psychiatric and nursing services. This location serves over 650 consumers monthly.
The Youth Services program is located at the Parkway Building. The services provided at this location include community support for children, youth, and young adults via the Transitions program, treatment family home and professional parent home. This location serves almost 200 consumers monthly.
CMHS provides outpatient and residential services for men, women and children and adolescents. We have a variety of locations to meet the needs of the community. Services available include individual counseling, family therapy, group counseling and education, and community support services. CMHS is able to provide medication for the treatment of substance use disorders and alcohol use disorder.
CMHS believes in a medication first model of treatment for our clients. We have a SATOP comparable program of treatment and established relationships with probation & parole and Mental Health Courts in Jackson County. Please contact our substance use program for more details.

Lotus House is a 14 bed residential facility that provides substance use services to women & minor children (to school age).
Gateway House is a residential facility that provides substance use services to men.
Turning Point is a 12-bed Intensive Residential Treatment Services facility. Adults with severe mental illness reside at this location and receive services directed at helping them to develop skills in all life domains toward achieving independence.
Residents participate in our Adult Community Support and psycho social rehabilitation programs, go on regularly scheduled outings and have access to competitive employment services with the guidance of our community support specialists.
Spring House cares for our community’s most vulnerable mental health population and helps them achieve stability. Spring House is an Intensive Residential Treatment Services facility focusing on clients experiencing persistent mental illness coinciding with chronic homelessness.
Spring House serves our community by housing these clients and stabilizing their mental health needs and will work to transition them to independent living on their journey to wellness.
Sunrise House is a 18-unit semi-independent housing complex constructed by the Community Housing Network under the HUD 811 guidelines. Supportive services in the facility are provided by Comprehensive Mental Health Services, Inc.
Residents have the option to participate our Adult Community Support programs, go on regularly scheduled outings and have access to competitive employment services with the guidance of consumer support specialists.
